About Number to Words Conversion
Converting numbers to their word equivalents is essential for formal documents, checks, legal papers, and professional writing. Written-out numbers reduce the risk of fraud and misinterpretation, which is why they're required on checks and legal contracts.
Number Scales
This converter uses the short scale numbering system (used in the US, UK, and most English-speaking countries):
| Number | Name | Zeros after 1 |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | Thousand | 3 |
| 1,000,000 | Million | 6 |
| 1,000,000,000 | Billion | 9 |
| 1,000,000,000,000 | Trillion | 12 |
| 1,000,000,000,000,000 | Quadrillion | 15 |
Common Uses
- Checks: "Pay to the order of... One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars"
- Legal Documents: Contracts often spell out amounts to prevent alterations
- Formal Writing: Style guides recommend spelling out numbers in certain contexts
- Education: Teaching number names and place values
- Accessibility: Screen readers benefit from spelled-out numbers
Writing Conventions
Different style guides have varying rules about when to spell out numbers:
- AP Style: Spell out one through nine; use numerals for 10 and above
- Chicago Style: Spell out zero through one hundred
- Scientific Writing: Use numerals for measurements and data
- Beginning of Sentences: Always spell out numbers at the start of a sentence
Decimals
For decimal numbers, the converter says "point" followed by each digit individually. For example, 3.14 becomes "three point one four." For currency, you might write "three dollars and fourteen cents" instead.
Tip: For checks, write the cents as a fraction over 100. For example: "One hundred twenty-three and 45/100 dollars"
